What's the best area to stay in London?
Short answer
For a first visit, stay in Bloomsbury, South Bank or Covent Garden — central, walkable and served by several Tube lines. For better value and more character, stay in Shoreditch, Bermondsey or Angel and accept a fifteen-minute commute into the middle.
The thing that actually matters is Tube proximity, not postcode prestige. A cheaper room two minutes from a Zone 2 station beats an expensive one fifteen minutes from anything.
Avoid booking beside a mainline station on price alone: the areas immediately around Paddington, Victoria and King's Cross are functional but charmless after dark.

Quiet garden squares, walkable to the British Museum, Soho and King's Cross. Best all-round first-visit base.
South Bank / Waterloo
River walks, theatres and food markets on the doorstep; strong transport links.
Shoreditch

Calm, well-heeled, excellent for a slower trip with good restaurants and Regent's Park.

Value option with Maltby Street, Borough Market and a fast Tube into the City.
