Is London safe at night?
Short answer
Yes, broadly. London is a busy, well-lit city where walking at night is normal in most central and inner areas. The genuine risks are phone snatching by moped or bicycle, and unlicensed minicabs. Violent crime against visitors is rare; opportunist theft is not.
Phone theft is the one thing worth changing your behaviour for. Snatches happen on pavements near main roads — Oxford Street, Shoreditch High Street, Kensington — where a rider can accelerate away. Don't walk while holding your phone out; step into a doorway to check a map.
Only use black cabs hailed on the street or a booked app car. A car that offers you a lift outside a club is not licensed and not insured.
Night Tube runs on the Central, Victoria, Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly lines on Friday and Saturday nights, and night buses run every night. Waiting on a busy platform is safer than walking an unfamiliar route.
