When is the best time of year to visit London?
Short answer
Mid-May to early July and September are the best windows: long daylight, warm-enough evenings, everything open, and prices below peak. August is hot, crowded and full of closed neighbourhood restaurants. January and February are cheapest but dark by 4pm.
The rain reputation is overstated — London gets less annual rainfall than Rome. What it does get is grey, and in December the sun sets before 4pm, which changes what a day feels like more than temperature does.
Late November through December has genuine charm: markets, lit streets and pubs with fires. It is also the busiest shopping period, so avoid Oxford Street entirely.
