Do you need to book restaurants in London?
Short answer
For Thursday to Saturday evenings at any well-reviewed restaurant, yes — book two to four weeks ahead. Everywhere else, walk-ins are realistic if you arrive before 6.30pm or after 9pm. Pubs, markets and most neighbourhood places never need a booking.
London's booking culture has tightened, but the pressure is concentrated in a narrow band: 7.30–8.45pm, Thursday to Saturday. Shift an hour either side and the same room has tables.
Many of the best-regarded restaurants keep counter seats for walk-ins. Turning up alone or as a pair at opening time works far more often than people expect.
